Meeting Immediate Human Needs

The Vision

A community in which everyone can be self-sufficient and is able to meet their basic needs.

Desired Community Outcomes

  • Community members have enough to eat.

  • Everyone has a safe, warm, secure place to be.

  • Community members are provided resources to assist them to meet their basic needs, such as dental care, and health care, and personal wellness.

This Year We...

This year United Way of Mid-Maine focused on two important issues: food and fuel security.

Maine winters are difficult to endure. Because of this year’s extended cold weather, we found ourselves with a higher degree of concern to provide assistance to these individuals. We worked closely with KVCAP to authorize a release of over $10,000 to the agency for distribution to those in need.  Those funds helped more than 25 of the most desperate families with an average benefit of $350 for fuel assistance. In addition, some of the funds were provided to the Federated Church in Skowhegan and Pleasant Street United Methodist in Waterville to aid parishioners in filling their fuel tanks.

Ensuring an adequate food supply for everyone in the community was the second issue addressed. The most important and successful effort in this area was the training session “Who Has the Keys to the Freezer?” which was co-sponsored by Encore Leadership Corps. Representatives from food pantries across the state attended the event to exchange ideas; and were presented with strategies and resources detailing sustainability, staffing, recruiting, and retaining volunteers.
