Frequently Asked Questions

Why give to United Way?
United Way is more than a single organization. Giving through United Way makes it easier to give to multiple charities and/or charities of your choice. Payroll deduction makes it easy.

How much of your money goes out to the national office?
Each year UWMM gives 1% (a penny of each dollar) to the national office.

What is pledge loss?
Every year, a certain percentage (currently 10.4%) of pledges made to United Way is never collected due to employees leaving jobs, layoffs and shutdowns. UWMM encourages companies to introduce a new hires program to lessen the amount of pledges lost.

Does United Way fund abortions?
No. None of the United Way funded organizations provide abortions. Funds designated by donors are directed to the appropriate designation.

What does the United Way do in addition to raising money?
In order to maximize the effectiveness of its stewardship role, United Way has undertaken a new, proactive approach to defining and addressing community needs. We are now identifying the root causes of problems and are looking to change the conditions that led to the problems in the first place. United Way works with businesses, government, non-profit organizations, and individuals to affect change in the community. United Way also assists non-profit agencies with recruiting, training volunteers, along with providing resources in the areas of management, technical assistance, training and leadership.
