The Federal Emergency Food and Shelter Program provides funding to help area food banks,
soup kitchens and emergency shelters. In 2007 two local EFSP boards, made up of
representatives from Somerset and Kennebec counties, allocated $103,684 to agencies
across the two counties for rent, mortgages, utilities, meals, food and shelter. Congress, as
part of the federal budget, appropriates funds for this program each year.
